If you have a map.img file unlocked for your nuvi (?) just install a micro sd card and copy the map to that. Note you need to create a folder named Map on the card and place the.img file in that.

You might also find it faster to send the map to the card with it connected to your mac and then once completed install the card into your nuvi. Incidentally as well as voices you can delete unwanted help, EULA, text, keyboard and vehicle files to free up more space, although it's still unlikely to be enough. Thank you alanb. I've not sure what size memory the 50LM has but it isn't sold in the US with a full North American map set installed, only Lower 49 states or US and Canada. To me that would indicate that at the most the Nuvi has 4GB of internal storage. That's pretty tight for a full NA map set without an SD card holding some of the map files. The SD card slot on the 50LM is at the bottom left hand side of the Nuvi when it's facing you. Since it's a micro SD card the slot is very small. Be careful when inserting the SD card, the metal contacts go in first but may go eirher way, face up or face down depending on the model. DO NOT Force it, it should go in easily and you will hear it lock in when inserted properly.

To remove use your fingernail and push in slightly, it is spring loaded and should pop out. Click on the arrow in the pic link to view a video on the SD card location.

I'm trying to figure out how to install the latest free map update to my Garmin Nuvi 500. I've looked on openstreetmap and GPSfiledepot, as well as the search engine for this forum, and I can't seem to find simple, clear instructions on how to proceed.

Topo would be great (I have that now) but not totally necessary, and if I could get something that shows trail maps for state and county parks in Iowa, that would be cool as well (I don't even know if they make such a thing, though).
