While date codes and the shorter serial number are still found on some lenses, this inclusion will likely end completely. We loved the date code because it made aging a lens easy. However, now we can age a lens based on the serial number alone.

The firmware version could possibly tell you if the camera if of a newer batch but that's only as good date-wise as the last firmware update date. And it could have been updated by the store. If you buy it from a reputable store that does not pass used cameras as new, I don't see how you can buy a new camera that was produced last year, they should be new stock, since the camera sells quite well. It started with 1 (or even 0 I'm not sure) and then was getting higher chronologically. I got mine in October 05 and it had 1 in the fifth position however I exchanged the initial one for another two weeks later and it came already with 2 in the fifth digit position.
Later people were reporting here having 5 or even 6 (summer 06). Now I have no clue what is the current batch number distributed today.
Be aware that the S/N at the bottom of your camera is the full one. The one displayed in the RAW software (from EXIF) does not have the first 0 digit so read the one from camera bottom. Also be aware that the 5D with 1 in the fifth position (very early batch) has some problems with firmware upgrade what has been confirmed officially by Canon.
